- Cruisers need travel insurance. Get it from a reputable company to cover trip cancellation, trip interruption and medical evacuation. Read the policy before you go, and take your policy with you (see www.insuremytrip.com).
- Bring a backup credit card with a high credit line for an emergency.
- Never leave a ship when ill until you or ship personnel have contacted your next of kin, travel insurer or the U.S. Embassy. And get the name of the cruise line's port agent.
- Find out what the ship policy is if you do get sick. If cleared by a doctor, can you rejoin the cruise? How?
- If you have medical expenses while abroad, save all receipts and keep a record of what happened.
- If you have a problem, contact the ship's purser immediately or send a letter or fax to the cruise line.
- Plan to sue? It is hard, because problems at sea are governed by maritime law, which trumps many U.S. laws. But if you want to, do it quick. Most contracts of passage have restrictive language about filing suit and where.
